About
I'm James and I work with men and young adults who are carrying more than they let on. Trauma, depression, anger, grief, whatever it is you have been pushing down because someone told you to man up or move on. My job is to give you a space where you don't have to perform strength. You just get to be honest. After 12 years of doing this work I still believe the hardest step is walking through the door and I make that part as easy as possible.
My approach is direct and practical. I use EMDR to help clients process trauma that feels stuck in their body and psychodynamic therapy to understand the patterns that keep showing up in your relationships, your career, and your self-talk. I am not the therapist who sits in silence and nods. I will challenge you, I will call things out when I see them, and I will also be the first person to remind you how far you have come when you forget.
Before private practice I spent five years in community mental health in the Bronx working with people who never thought therapy was for them. That experience taught me that healing is not about having the right words or the right background. It is about showing up and being willing to look at what hurts. If you have been going back and forth about starting therapy just book the free 15 minute call. No pressure, no commitment, just a conversation.

Approach
My style is direct, warm, and real. I don't do long silences or vague head nods. When something comes up in session I name it and we work through it together. I believe therapy should feel like talking to someone who actually gets it, not someone reading from a textbook. I balance structure with flexibility. Some sessions we follow a plan, other sessions we throw the plan out because something more important showed up. I adjust to what you need not the other way around. My clients tell me I am the first therapist who made them feel like they could actually say what they were thinking without being judged for it. That is the goal every single time.
